Project Overview

Problem: Many low-income residents are struggling to shop for groceries, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. The access to stores and the types of food is limited for these residents and can therefore create issues with worrying where the source of their groceries will come from.

Solution: Create a system that can reduce the stress and shame of grocery shopping for CalFresh/SNAP users. Allow all low-income residents to gain access and have no limitations on where they can grocery shop.

Impact: fgfg

The Challenge

We all have to eat. We all need groceries. There’s no distinction. SNAP should not be used as a tool to separate ourselves, separate our communities, separate our families or separate our society from each other.

— Dr. Mariana Chilton / Director of the Center for Hunger-Free Communities at Drexel University

According to the University of California’s 2017 Global Food Initiative report, 48% of UC undergraduate and 25% of graduate students “experience some level of food insecurity.”

  • Food security is linked to better retention rate in staying enrolled in school

  • Students that are in the low-income category are qualified for food assistance programs but are not aware if they qualify. They end up not applying at all because of the stigma and assumptions of not qualifying.
